Our Curriculum

The curriculum is everything our pupils experience in school – from the moment they arrive until the moment they leave. We believe that our curriculum enables children to be successful learners who demonstrate our school values.

At Buckingham Primary School, we recognise that reading for pleasure is a key indicator of a child’s future success. Therefore, reading is at the heart of our curriculum. We have a strong reading culture, where children have access to a wide range of children’s literature, including poetry, stories and non-fiction texts. We aim for children to see themselves represented in the stories they read so they are more engaged and their identities are validated. Children are taught to decode through a systematic, synthetic phonics programme so that they can develop into confident, fluent readers, who choose to read for pleasure. We identify and teach ambitious vocabulary so that our children can fully access our curriculum.

As an Attachment Aware School, we know that in order for our children to be successful learners, they must be emotionally regulated, feel safe and have built strong relationships. We use the PATHS Programme so that children are able to empathise with the feelings and actions of others, seeing points of views and beliefs other than their own. Pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is valued and a part of everything we do. They are taught to be tolerant and accepting of the beliefs of others, both in our school and the wider world. In recognising the development of the whole child, the pastoral support given to children is strong so they can fully access the curriculum. The school has various systems which support the emotional and mental well-being of children and provides signposting to their parents.

Our curriculum honours and promotes our school motto:

‘Believe  Persevere  Succeed’

When children leave our school, we want them to be:

  • Aspirational– confident and ambitious to try new things, determined to succeed, set challenging goals and strive to achieve them.
  • Respectful– embrace a multi-cultural world, follow rules, respect boundaries, be accepting of the views and beliefs of others and be aware of how their actions affect others.
  • Resilient– have emotional resilience to manage different situations; have the skills to find and communicate solutions and see opportunities to develop themselves.
  • Knowledgeable– have the skills and knowledge to adapt to an ever-changing world, be a life-long learner and be aware of the impact their actions have on our environment.
